What Does the Allen School Have to be Thankful For?

This Thanksgiving, the Allen School and its students taking medical billing classes online, those studying to earn nursing assistant certification and those taking  medical office assistant training have much to be thankful for.  We’d like to express our gratitude in this season of thankfulness for the following:Online medical coding class students are thankful for not having to commute as the weather grows colder.  Taking medical billing classes online means they can stay comfortably ensconced in their cozy homes while they work on starting an exciting  new career.Certified nursing assistant trainees are thankful for the US Department of Labor statistics that show ongoing robust growth in the medical field.  This means once they’ve earned their nursing assistant certifications, they won’t have to worry about their jobs being outsourced or being  laid off should the economy turn sour again.Medical office assistants are thankful for an administrative pathway into the medical industry that could be a lifelong career in and of itself; or could be the first step on a journey into a career in medicine. We here at the Allen School blog are thankful for the ongoing opportunity to bring interesting, relevant, sometimes comical information and stories to you, our readers. As we all sit down to Thanksgiving Day feasts with our loved ones and friends, let’s all remember to give thanks for those brave men and women who are serving our country overseas in the US Armed Forces.

Allen School Stands With Paris

This week’s appalling events remind us all how lucky we are to live in a free society.  As New Yorkers, we too have been faced with the specter of violent extremism in the form of terrorist attacks.  In the wake of the 9/11 attacks, the people of France stood by us and sent New York City and all of the United States their love, support and succor.  It is our turn now to return the love and moral support to the people of Paris and France in this, their hour of darkness and loss.  We stand with you, people of France. At the same time, let’s also take a moment to ponder the realities facing those innocents caught in the crossfire of the civil war in Syria and the absolutely heartbreaking humanitarian crisis it has spawned.  As an academy that trains compassionate people to provide medical care and attention to their fellow man, let us take this opportunity to set aside the fear and the anger we’re all feeling at the indiscriminate wasting of lives and remember that by and large, the people most hurt by war and the atrocities it brings are innocents.Love one another and be kind to each other.  This is our only world and we must succeed at learning to peacefully live together.

Medical Coding Online Classes Make Time for Relaxation

We see it everywhere in our busy modern lives.  People working two or three jobs; managing households, raising children, paying mortgages, taking care of elderly parents and the myriad other tasks that comprise the day-to-day for millions of Americans.  It has been getting worse.  Even holidays, traditionally time set aside for quiet reflection and relaxation, have been co-opted by business.  Think for example about Thanksgiving.  In an unhealthy trend, more and more retail stores are trying to outperform the competition by having their “pre-Black Friday” sales on Thanksgiving itself.  This means all the workers who used to have the day off to spend giving thanks with their loved ones, must now work double hard on the former day of rest. While this troubling trend does show some signs of reversing with numerous retailers making good PR hay out of deciding to stay closed this year on Turkey Day, there are still plenty of ways the average American is missing out on critical downtime.  Google the term, “the importance of downtime” and see the amazing list of articles that is returned in the results.  From outlets like Scientific American to Forbes to numerous university studies, the consensus is that downtime is critically important to success in any occupation.  Its just that more and more, folks aren’t making the time to take the time. That’s why we love offering medical coding online classes to busy men and women who may be struggling with all the responsibilities we ticked off at the beginning of this post (and more).  The schedule flexibility one enjoys studying medical coding online classes allows one to more easily carve out some daily downtime.  Even if it is only for 20 minutes each day.  The benefits of a bit of quiet, daily meditation cannot be overstated.  Read any of the articles returned in the Google search linked above for the details on why downtime is so critical in today’s world.  You can thank us later!

9 Reasons to Change Careers and Become a Certified Nurse Assistant

Entrepreneur magazine recently published an article listing 9 reasons to change your career.  We’ve put a little spin on it to help persuade those who may be considering changing their careers and pursuing a new life as a certified nurse assistant.
  1. You didn’t chose your current career.  Maybe your family had a job for you right out of high school.  Maybe it was in a field you have no passion for.  Don’t settle for a lifetime of work in a field you cannot stand.  Become a certified nurse assistant today!
  2. The economy hit your field hard.  That’s unfortunate.  However, the medical industry and jobs like certified nurse assistant are consistently listed among those most resistant to economic fluctuation and poised for growth over the next decade.
  3. You’ve developed an interest in an emerging industry.  Health care is always an emerging industry with scientific breakthroughs happening all the time.  Plus, it is a field poised for continued growth as the American population ages.
  4. You hit a ceiling. If you’ve come as far up the ladder as you can in a dead end field, there’s plenty of room for growth among the ranks of certified nurse assistants in hospitals and doctors’ offices across the USA.
  5. You need significantly more money.  Ear far more as a certified nurse assistant than you would in a retail or service industry job.
  6. Your talents don’t match your field.  Certified nurse assistants are known to be people with great empathy, compassion and a drive to help heal the sick.  If those skills aren’t valued in your current role, perhaps you should consider a change.
  7. You have a major change in perspective.  Perhaps it isn’t financial or material rewards that drive your passion to serve.  You will have a hard time finding a job more personally rewarding than being a certified nursing assistant.
  8. The challenge is gone.  You’re not feeling motivated or challenged in your current gig?  Certified nursing assistants’ lives on the job are anything but boring.  The challenge of bringing people back to health is an ongoing and limitless one.
  9. You’re burnt out.  It happens.  If you feel like a change is in order, consider the role of certified nurse assistant and explore if it may be the new career you’ve been seeking!

Alternative Study Tactics for Students at the Allen School

While you’ve studied your entire life to learn math, science and history, you may find that studying as an adult can be trickier. Whether you’re learning to live on your own or you’re juggling a career and family while you pursue your education, it’s important to study as efficiently and as creatively as possible. At The Allen School, we want our students to succeed. That’s why we’ve compiled this list of alternative study tactics that students can implement. Choosing to pursue a career in healthcare is a wonderful and rewarding decision. By implementing these study tactics, you’ll learn even more as you continue to work toward your goals.

Watch videos

While your professors and textbooks will be very beneficial in learning the material that’s going to be covered on your exams, sometimes hearing an idea from a fresh perspective can be helpful. Consider watching videos online from other medical students and professors. Simply search for the topic you’re interested in or that you want more information on. Sometimes just hearing an idea from another person is enough to help you remember it.

Make flashcards fun

training to be a medical assistant Phoenix AZA lot of students overlook the value of flashcards. The truth is, though, that flashcards can help you memorize important ideas, names and procedures you’ll need in your medical career. Consider downloading a flashcard app so you can review flashcards on-the-go. Listen to music while you review so you don’t zone out or get bored. You can also make regular flashcards by hand to use while you’re relaxing in the bath or even lying in bed. Some students like to walk on the treadmill while they review flashcards. Others watch a television show and do flashcards during commercial breaks. The possibilities are endless.

Write a story

You don’t have to be a writer to try this study method. Learning new vocabulary words can be tough, so it’s important to use them as frequently as possible so you can retain them. One way you can memorize your lists and words is to use them in a story. Consider writing a one-page story using the words or ideas you’re covering in class. This doesn’t have to be a fancy or interesting story. Just try to use the words you’re learning in a pretend scenario. You might be surprised at just how helpful writing the words out can be.

Don’t study the same way each day

medical assistant students NYOne of the most important things you can do is to mix up your studying. While studying can be boring, you need to do your best to stay focused. Switching things up can help. For example, if you go to a study group on Tuesdays, make sure you study alone on Wednesdays. If you review your notes on Thursdays, try to do flash cards on Fridays. If you’re ready to take your studying to a new level and pursue a career in the healthcare field, The Allen School is ready for you. Contact us today so we can help you take the next steps in reaching the career goals you’ve been working toward.

Medical Assistant Training Stressful? Try meditation!

Meditation can be a very positive activity for students – from middle school students to those taking medical assistant training and every kind of student in between.  According to Edutopia, one California middle school first introduced Quiet Time (QT), a stress-reduction program as an optional activity, in the spring of 2007.   Consisting of two periods, 15 minutes each in the morning and afternoon, students are afforded the time and opportunity to sit quietly or meditate.   Since starting the Quiet Time program this middle school has witnessed a 50% reduction in suspensions and a drop in truancy of 65%.  Best of all grade point averages have increased almost a full percent.
For the medical assistant training student taking classes in the midst of already busy adult lives, the act of meditation can also be a transformative one. The myriad benefits of daily meditation for students can include:
  • Improved academic performance
  • Better focus and stronger memory
  • Reduced academic stress
  • Reduction in anxiety
  • Stronger brain efficiency
  • Happier, more confident students
Meditation as an activity is non-denominational and requires no special training.  It is simply the act of quiet mindfulness, quieting of one’s thoughts/internal monologue, a focus on breathing and holding positive thoughts in mind.
Here’s a post from a Columbia University blog on the benefits students stand to capture by adding a daily meditation to their routines.  Be healthy of mind and body as you study to become a medical office assistant!

Medical Billing Online Classes and Telecommuting Careers

Taking medical billing online classes is an excellent way to leverage technology in pursuit of a new career because the flexibility of online study allows one to fit retraining into an otherwise very busy life/schedule.  You can continue to work in your current field while you’re studying medical billing online classes.  You can also manage a busy home/family scene while studying medical billing online classes, making it easier to find career growth without having to disrupt your family life.  Perhaps the best thing about studying online to become a medical billing pro is that the field of medical billing and coding continues to be one of the fields where telecommuting jobs are in relatively high supply. It should be noted that most medical billing jobs available to recent graduates of medical billing online classes don’t necessarily offer the option to work by remote on day one.  Typically, the work-from-home options for these roles are awarded to those with a decent level of experience working in this field on-site.  But if you’ve put in a few years as a biller in an office environment and you’ve proved your mettle, the work lends itself particularly well to telecommuting and many doctors and hospitals are happy to oblige for workers who’ve shown dependability, attention to detail and a good work ethic. This is something to consider if a telecommute position is something you aspire to.  It should be of some comfort to know that overall, remote work arrangements continue to grow in popularity across many segments of the economy.  Forbes calls telecommuting the “Future of Work” in this recent article.   The New York Times also agrees.   The Society of Human Resource Managers, an organization with a bead on the pulse of workforce trends all over the world, talks about the productivity enhancing benefits of work-from-home arrangements in this article. If this is a lifestyle that you wish to embrace, and you’re looking for a career option with a good record of supporting telecommuting positions, you should consider medical billing online classes with the Allen School.

Saving Daylight for Busy Nursing Assistant Training Students

Yes, we spun the clock back an hour over this past weekend.  That’s why you’re reading this blog post after arriving to class an hour late (oops)!  But in all seriousness, the semi-annual ritual of monkeying with the linear nature of time known as “Daylight Saving Time”  (not daylight savings) as some mistakenly refer to it seems to please some and annoy others.Wikipedia explains, “While the times of sunrise and sunset change at roughly equal rates as the seasons change, proponents of Daylight Saving Time argue that most people prefer a greater increase in daylight hours after the typical “nine-to-five” workday Supporters have also argued that DST decreases energy consumption by reducing the need for lighting and heating, but the actual effect on overall energy use is heavily disputed.”However, whether or not the shift results in producing more daylight during daytime hours for you depends on you routine.  If you’re working the third shift as a nursing assistant, you likely aren’t seeing much daylight regardless and the whole “Fall back-Spring Forward” action seems more like an inconvenience than anything else.  Nevertheless, for your nursing assistant training student counterparts, still studying to earn certification, the extra hour of sunlight makes it more pleasant; providing a daylight morning commute for example. The folks over at Quartz.com have built this nifty interactive graphic you can use to determine whether or not Daylight Saving is something that works for you or represents a pointless exercise.  Simply visit the link here, enter in your awakening time and bed time and see how much (or little) the clock shift impacts your exposure to daylight.  However, if you’re late for nursing assistant training class because you forgot to change the clock, maybe do it later.  Get to class!

WHO Says Sausage, Ham and Processed Meats Cause Cancer

The World Health Organization evaluated results from more than 800 studies from around the globe on whether or not processed meats are implicated in causing cancer among those who eat them.  Their conclusion is that processed meats – those that are cured, salted or otherwise treated – do indeed raise the probability of contracting cancer.  This information puts sausage, ham and other processed meats in the same category as asbestos and cigarette smoking. It would be enough to warn busy medical assistants and medical assistant trainees against grabbing a sausage, egg and cheese sandwich on their way to work or classes at the Allen School.  However, it is also information that a well-informed medical assistant can share with the patients he or she will come into contact with over the course of their careers in medicine.  The WHO also noted that red meats that are cooked over high heat like frying, grilling or other high-temp methods are also known to contain carcinogenic properties as a result of being cooked in this fashion.Dealing with patients suffering from life-threatening diseases like colon cancer, pancreatic cancer, stomach cancer and others is one of the more challenging aspects of work as a medical assistant.  At the same time, sharing preventative medical advice is also part of the job.  So when large-scale studies like the one the WHO produced about processed meats come to the forefront of the news, it is a good idea for medical assistants to take note and leverage the information in the work they do with patients.

A Growing Demand: Industry Outlook for Medical Assistants

There has been a lot of talk lately about the value of a college education and the job opportunities (or lack thereof) facing recent graduates.
